This hypnotic track underscores the climactic sequence in which Doctor Caligari first transforms into his psychotic self, with the words Du Musst Caligari Werden (You must become Caligari) appearing in Expressionist script around him like the textual embodiment of uncontrollable internal voices. The whole film is an early (perhaps the first) cinematic exploration of psychosis through its confused and unresolved plot twists, a device that would come to characterise the psychological thriller, horror and sci-fi genres.
