This track underscores the epic scenes of "ruinelust" (love of ruins), wilderness and sea that characterise Nosferatu as much as Max Shrek's indelible performance. In this sequence, protagonist Hutter leaves his home on horseback to journey to "the land of ghosts": Count Orlok's castle in the Carpathian Mountains. Here he is met by a coach driven by a mysterious, verminous figure. They hurtle towards the castle at unholy speeds (the sped-up film now looks comical though was no doubt chilling in 1922). The sequence also features cutting edge use of polarised film and shots of castle, bridges and mountains expressing the Romantic fascination with the natural world as both awe-ful and sublime, the lure of the unknown. This track is influenced both by Morricone in the use of electric guitar effects and slide glissando and in the epic bassline and percussion, but also Pink Floyd, the grand cinematic sound of psychedelic prog being another lodestar for the Cabinet.
