about

This track opens the Cabinet of Doctor Caligari and captures the Weimar synthesis of darker discordance and tonal complexity with lighter more playful tones (in this theme almost samba-like). In this scene, we meet friends Alan and Francis deciding to go to the fair. Everything is happy, but they will soon encounter Doctor Caligari's Cabinet and doom-laden prognosis of its inhabitant - somnambulist Cesare: "How long will I live?" Alan asks him. "Till the break of dawn," Cesare proclaims, eyes thick with Expressionist paint, echoing the proximity to death that their generation must have felt in the aftermath of both the Western Front and the flu epidemic of 1918-1920.
